Low back pain is a common health challenge that at some point affects more than 80% of the population, making it second in frequency only to the common cold. Although many of us are aware that the common cold is due to a viral infection, back pain is often puzzling to its sufferers. Your Fort Worth Chiropractor is an expert at solving the puzzle.
Anatomy
Knowledge of the anatomy of the spine is very useful in understanding back pain. The spinal bones or vertebrae of the lower back consist of posterior joints called facets that join vertebrae to one another and serve to dictate the movement of the spine. Inter-vertebral discs, composed of strong cartilage, link the bodies of the vertebrae. This strong cartilage surrounds the nucleus, a soft material in the center of the inter-vertebral discs. The discs act as shock absorbers and spacers between the vertebrae. Ligaments and muscles also connect the vertebrae. The wedge-shaped bone at the bottom of the spine is the sacrum and is joined to the two pelvic bones at the sacroiliac joint. In a canal positioned between the body and the facets of the vertebrae is the spinal cord. The spinal nerves exit the spine between the vertebrae.
Causes of Back Pain
In most cases, back pain comes about without a trauma, an accident, or a major injury prior to the onset. The cause of most back pain is the cumulative effects of improper sitting posture, poor work habits, incorrect lifting, lack of healthy exercise and other negative lifestyle-related factors. All of these factors create stresses and imbalances on the spine and eventually cause pain. This is why people can often injure their back simply by bending over to pick up a piece of paper. The instability of the spine makes it vulnerable to even the most simple movements, such as bending. When this happens, the surrounding back muscles go into spasm to protect the stressed or injured tissues of the back. Chiropractors are back pain specialists. Your Fort Worth Chiropractor can help you to get out of pain quickly.
Disc Problems & Sciatica
Prolonged sitting, particularly in a unsuitable position produces increased pressure on the intervertebral discs and imbalances in the muscles around the spine. After a while the lower spine loses its ability to function normally during everyday stresses. Ultimately, the intervertebral disc develops small fissures, or cracks, allowing the soft nucleus to distend the disc outward. If the disc pushes on sensitive tissues, it produces the pain that is often referred to as a slipped disc. Sciatica develops when the disc presses on the spinal nerve. The symptoms of sciatica include pain, tingling, numbness, and often weakness in the lower extremities. Sadly, if the disc protrusion or herniation is large and the condition isn’t managed correctly, surgery may beneeded to remove the herniated disc material. But, with the correct chiropractic adjustments and management, as well as postural exercises, most of these cases can healthfully mend. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms defined above, it is crucial for you to seek chiropractic assistance.
Spondylosis
Increased erosion and weight-bearing stress on the spine occurs when there is repetitive injury to the discs, facet joints, and surrounding ligaments. This stress can unfavorably affect the cartilage around the joints and induce calcium to deposit in the tissues around the vertebrae, forming bone spurs. These spurs can restrict adjacent nerves, blood vessels and soft tissue resulting in symptoms ranging from minor pain and numbness to gross sensory loss and muscular atrophy. This compression causes a form of arthritis, called Spondylosis, that can also occur as part of the aging process of the spine. Nevertheless, factors such as previous trauma, unhealthy lifestyle, and repetitive stress injury influence the time of onset in life. Regular chiropractic treatment and overall chiropractic management is extremely beneficial in slowing the aging process of the spine, as well as assisting Spondylosis sufferers in managing their condition. Your Fort Worth Chiropractor has assisted many Spondylosis sufferers.
Sacroiliac Problems
The sacroiliac joints are a prevalent area of dysfunction or injury in the low back. These weight-bearing joints link the upper part of the body to the lower pelvic portion and are normally very strong and stable. Trauma from falls, sports injuries, or the lifting of heavy objects can cause the joints to become unstable and move to an abnormal position. This condition is called a sacroiliac subluxation. Women may experience this condition during or after their pregnancy. The imbalances in the lower extremities caused by sacroiliac subluxation can produce a functional long and short leg. Individuals with this syndrome will feel pain particularly with prolonged standing and walking, or during or after physical activity. Many complain of lack of energy and feeling tired easily. Other symptoms such as neck and shoulder pain, as well as headaches, can develop further up the spine. Chiropractic adjustments establish the proper alignment of the joints and are extremely affective in ameliorating sacroiliac problems. Ask your Fort Worth chiropractor how you can experience effective pain relief.
Spinal Subluxation
A prevalent disorder of the lower back, as well as the entire spine, is subluxated or misaligned facet joints. Subluxations can happen on their own or in conjunction with disc problems and Spondylosis. They not only create pain, but they can also endanger the spinal nerves as they exit the foramen or spaces between the vertebrae, and create nerve compression, known as paraethesia. Paraesthesia is an alteration of sensation described as a tingling, burning or “funny feeling.” Paraesthesia in the upper extremities more often than notoriginates from nerve problems in the neck, while paraesthesia in the lower extremities is very often associated with nerve challengesin the lumbar region (lower back). Visceral problems such as asthma and gastric conditions can also belinked to, or complicated by, spinal subluxations and nerve compression. Subluxations are best corrected by chiropractic adjustments.
Trauma
Trauma such as a fall, car accident, or sports injury can cause trauma to the spine and lower back. Frequently these traumas create over-stretching or tearing of the tissues of the spine. When this occurs a person can experience considerable pain and immobility. In order to prevent long term disability or the development of any of the conditions listed above, chiropractic adjustments and treatment at the onset of symptoms is vital. If you experience a trauma, call your chiropractor as soon as possible.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is often associated with low back pain. Chiropractic care offers exceptional pain relief.
When it comes to the spine, chiropractors have more education and training than medical doctors. I can provides state of the art diagnosis and highly competent treatment for any of the above-mentioned dysfunctions of the spine and lower back.

The average human takes between 3,000 and 5,000 steps per day. Add to that activities such as running and aerobic exercise, and we add not only more steps, but stress, to our already overly-worked feet. It is no wonder that plenty of people have aches and pains in this part of the body. Factors such as flat feet or over-pronated feet, individual walking and running style, and the type of shoe a person wears can determine if someone will experience foot and ankle pain. In addition these factors can also affect the health of a person’s back, knees and legs. Detailed below are some of the commonplace conditions that affect the feet and ankle.
Hallux Valgus and Bunions
Hallux Valgus, a slow-developing condition, is noticeable when the big toe or hallux turns towards the outside of the foot, in many cases practically overlapping or bumping into the adjacent toe. In addition, a bump, called a bunion, frequently is generated on the inside of the big toe. Hallux Valgus pain is normally felt during weight-bearing activities such as walking or prolonged standing, but if a bunion has developed, a “numbing” or “burning” pain in the big toes can be felt at rest.
To be exact, the actual challenge is not in the bone, itself, but in the joint between the big toe and the first metatarsal bone, i.e., the first metatarsal-phalangeal. The pain and deformity associated with Hallux Valgus is due to damage to this joint. Over-pronation that produces undue pressure on the big toe and first metatarsal during walking creates the prolonged wear and tear that many times results in Hallux Valgus. Inflammatory arthritis that harms the joint and produces degenerative changes is a further cause. Although, one of the most recognizable causes of the condition is the high-heeled and pointed shoes that women frequently wear. These shoes not only put extra stress on the joint, but also assist in pushing the big toe to the outside.
If you are experiencing Hallux Valgus, your chiropractor can examine your foot to determine which factors are contributing to your problem, and then use a number of chiropractic techniques and modalities to lessen pain and improve the function of your foot.
Plantar Fascitis ( Heel Pain )
One of the most prevalent foot ailments is heel pain, and the cause is often irritation of the plantar fascia or Plantar Fascitis. The plantar fascia, a band of connective tissue that encircles the muscles on the bottom of the foot, connects the heel bone to the ball of the foot. It supports the arch, protects the foot, and absorbs shock.
Those with Plantar Fascitis many times complain of pain in the morning after first standing when they get out of bed and also when they stand up after having sat for a while. The pain starts just in front of the heel bone, but can extend over the entire bottom of the foot.
Over time, irritation associated with the condition can lead to the development of scar tissue, calcium deposits and eventually heel spurs. Heel spurs, a bony growth on the front part of the calcaneus of the heel bone where the plantar fascia adheres, can cause a sharp stabbing pain with walking.
People with other foot conditions, especially Pes Planus (flat feet) and/or over-pronation, are most susceptible to Plantar Fascitis, but other factors often contribute as well. One of the most powerful contributing factors is muscle imbalances between the calf muscles and the muscles on the bottom of the foot, both of which attach to the calcaneus or heel bone. Often the calf muscles get short and tight exerting a strong pull upon the back of the calcaneus. Such a problem causes unnecessary stress on the smaller, weaker plantar muscles and its fascia that are connected to the other side of the calcaneus. In addition to running and jumping activities, wearing high heels can also create a shortening and tightening of the calf muscles. Sudden strenuous activity after a period of prolonged inactivity, abnormal walking patterns (such as over-pronation), improper footwear, walking on hard or uneven surfaces (especially barefooted), and obesity all stress the plantar fascia.
Nurses, teachers, and waiters who are required to be constantly on their feet, and those whose activities involve aerobic, volleyball, running, basketball, and tennis are more susceptible to Plantar Fascitis.
It is often not easy to manage Plantar Fascitis once it has developed, and the problem can become extremely painful and persistent. Chiropractors are well-trained in not only determining the cause of your condition, but in recommending appropriate treatment, such as joint manipulation, muscle stretching and strengthening exercises, special taping, ultrasound therapy and, in some cases, orthotics.
Achilles Tendonitis
The Achilles tendon (the heel cord), is a large tendon that is a continuance of the two largest calf muscles. It travels down the back of the lower leg and connects to the heel bone. Achilles Tendonitis is an extremely painful, and often debilitating inflammation of the tendon. Damage to this important tendon can make it difficult or even impossible to walk. More often than not, a debilitating injury to the tendon is the result of an accumulation of smaller stresses that cause small tears over time, though a sudden, single incident, such as jumping, can also be the cause of a serious problem. Generally, the appearance of symptoms is gradual. The discomfort may be relatively minor at first, but slowly worsens if the sufferer tries to “work through” the pain. Many Achilles tendonitis sufferers attribute their initial discomfort to the aches and pains that go along with age or fatigue. In severe cases, a total rupture of the tendon can occur, resulting in traumatic damage and excruciating pain that makes walking virtually impossible and may even require corrective surgery.
Achilles tendonitis is often associated with athletes and performers, such as dancers, who participate in running and jumping activities, particularly those that include sudden starts and stops. However, women who typically wear high-heeled shoes are also at risk, especially if they switch to sport shoes for exercise. In these cases, the Achilles tendon and muscles gradually adapt to the shortened position caused by wearing high-heels, as the heel does not have to stretch all the way to the ground. When this happens, the switch to exercise or flat shoes forces the Achilles tendon to stretch further than it is accustomed to, hence creating stress and inflammation. Therefore, high-heels should not be worn everyday. If they are unavoidable, stretching should be done every morning and night to keep the Achilles tendon lengthened.
As mentioned above, Achilles tendonitis is often age-related, especially in men who are athletes. As a person ages, the arch tends to flatten creating over-pronation and increased stress on the Achilles tendon, as well as the calf and foot muscles. Likewise, problems are also common in the “weekend warrior” who exercises infrequently, as well as those who are just beginning to exercise. In such people, the muscles and tendons have little flexibility due to inactivity, and immoderacy in exercise in the beginning can create tendonitis. Therefore, people who are just starting to exercise after a long layoff should stretch properly, start slowly, and increase gradually.
Regardless of the cause of the problem, if an individual is experiencing the symptoms of Achilles tendonitis, he or she should contact a qualified professional, such as a chiropractor, to manage the problem before it becomes severe. Your chiropractor has many years of experience in treating Achilles tendonitis.
Pes Planus ( Flat Feet )
It is likely that nearly one quarter of people have Pes Planus, more commonly known as flat feet. We are all born with flat feet, but somewhere between the ages 3-10 we develop an arch. However, some adults never develop an arch. There are a number of factors, besides genetic disposion that can create flat feet, or predispose a person to the affliction. A person’s job, level of activity, and lifestyle can cause a previously-developed arch to collapse later in life. Age and weight also are a factor in the development of the condition. Middle-aged individuals who have been working on their feet for years often experience flat feet, as do overweight individuals who are placing added stress on their feet and legs.
Some people have flat feet and never feel any annoyance, while others experience pain in the feet and knees, and occasionally in the hips and lower back as well. If you have flat feet and are experiencing distress, your Orlando chiropractor can prepare a treatment plan to not only help with pain reflief, but assist in preventing more problems from developing. Chiropractic therapy includes joint adjustments to improve foot function and resolve painful symptoms. Your chiropractor may also prescribe arch-supporting insoles, called orthotics, for additional support and stability.
Metatarsalgia ( Pain in the ball of the foot )
Metatarsalgia, sometimes called “ball-of-foot pain,” is a pain in the bottom of the foot just behind the toes where the foot bends during walking. The pain is caused by a problem in one or more of the five metatarsal bones that extend from about halfway up the foot to the toes.
While many people with metatarsalgia feel pain where their metatarsal bones join their toe bones, some also feel irritation along the entire length of the metatarsals and possibly between them. Discomfort vary from stiffness upon movement to a burning or stinging sensation. The amount of pain depends upon whether the condition is due to a dysfunction in the joints or an aggravation to the nerves as they travel along the metatarsals.
The cause of the distress is due to either structural or functional reasons. An example of a structural cause is when the metacarpal bones are either too long or too short creating aberrant mechanics in the feet and too much stress upon this area. Flat feet or excessive arch can also alter the stresses on the metatarsals causing similar symptoms.
There are other factors that can affect these bones that are often in the control of the sufferer. These include excess body weight, tight or high-heeled shoes, and excessive or poor running or athletic training. Too much weight and the wearing high-heeled shoes both add to stress upon the metatarsal, which leads to joint pain and nerve aggravation. Repetitive foot activities, like running, directly stress the metatarsals by exposing them to constant trauma.
Whatever the cause, a chiropractor can effectively care for metatarsalgia. After diagnosing what factors are underlying your condition, your chiropractor can offer a variety of non-invasive therapies, including orthotics, as well as advise on how you can avoid future pain.
See your Orlando chiropractor as soon as possible if you are experiencing any of the foot problems mentioned above.
There is no room in pitching training for heavy weight training. The latest scientific sports research is overwhelmingly against it for producing any benefits or for reducing risk of injury. The link below to the story of a 15 year old high school freshman pitcher, who ended up with shoulder surgery, should be a wake up call to parents, coaches and players — and to conditioning coaches who believe that strength training is essential for all sports activities. Those individuals have not read the research.
This pitcher, by the way, was no ordinary high school freshman pitcher. Just prior to his injury, his fastball was clocked at 88 mph at a college Division 1 pitching camp. This was a high school pitcher on his way to 95 mph or more which can mean multimillion dollar signing bonuses.
The research is quite clear on pitching workouts and weight training in baseball. Baseball pitching does not require excessive strength or much strength at all. Pitching is an explosive movement where velocity is created by momentum of the speed of movement into a long stride where the body stretches out like a huge rubber band creates and stores elastic energy. It is this stored elastic energy from the body that creates velocity…not the arm. The arm is along for the ride and is mainly for control. This is exactly why skinny pitchers or small pitchers such as Giants Tim Lincecum at 5′10″ 170 lbs. can throw fastballs in the 95-100 mph range.
What high school and college pitchers (and pros) require is general forms of fitness where explosive exercises such as medicine ball or lower body plyometrics help get the pitcher’s body fit to pitch thus reducing the risk of injury. There is never a need to do significant weight training. After about four to five weeks of weight training to build some general strength and prepare the body to do explosive full body exercises, there is no additional need to do any more weight training. Doing weight training during the baseball season makes no sense at all.
After reading this story there clearly is no need to say more except to be cautious about what maximum practice activities your son engages in whether it’s weight training or weighted balls. The body must first be trained for any maximal activity. This 15 year old was trained to do a heavy bench press. I would highly suggest that parents learn what their sons are doing at any strength training classes at school or at any private speed or strength classes. If your son’s high school or college coach is having them do heavy weight training you must step in and show them the research. If you don’t listen to these simple baseball pitching tips then this is what can be the result.

Besides spinal problems, knee pain and disability is one of the most commonplace dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system. Conditions concerning the knee can be divided into several categories including poor mechanics of the knee and impaired foot mechanics that compensate for foot pain, general overuse of the knee joint, problems due to arthritic changes in the joint, and traumatic injury from events such as sports and falls.
Non-trauma knee problems: The most widespread cause of non-traumatic pain is deficient mechanics of the knee joint and the corresponding stress on the soft tissues of the knee. Usually, the part of the knee affected is the patella or knee-cap. Often the patella does not move smoothly or does not move sufficiently on the femur during bending of the knee producing too much stress on the tendons, cartilage and ligaments. This specific condition is normally called chondromalacia patella (CMP) or Patella Femoral Syndrome (Knee Cap Pain). This condition is due to imbalances in the quadriceps muscles of the thigh that connect to and move the patella. Lower back conditions, particularly in the sacroiliac joints, are one of the main reasons for imbalances in the muscles related to knee movement, and resultant knee problems. Imbalances in muscle groups that connect to the knee can also lead to pain and dysfunction. For example, the muscles on the inside of the thigh, when strained and tight, can create pain on the medial or inside of the knee. Insufficient foot mechanics that cause gait irregularities such as pronation, are another cause of mechanical knee pain.
The correlative pain from overuse is most often noticeable during activity, especially stair climbing, running, jumping, and subsequent rising after prolonged sitting. A number of women appear to be predisposed to painful overuse conditions for anatomical reasons, although such conditions are many times related to wearing high heels on a regular basis.
The main treatment for mechanical or overuse injuries to the knee is to re-establish proper balance of the muscles, restore proper movement to the patella and other joints of the knee, and to correct any subluxations of the sacroiliac joints and bones of the foot. In some cases, a brace is used to assist with the positioning of the patella or to stabilize the joint. Chiropractors, such as your San Jose chiropractor, are highly experienced in providing knowledgeable assessment and treatment of these ailments.
Knee problems due to trauma: Traumatic injuries often happen during physical exertion that involves running and jumping, particularly. Sprains occur when tissue is torn by virtue of the knee being pulled or twisted beyond the capacity of the ligaments that hold the joint in place. The muscles that facilitate movement of the knee can also be torn during injury creating a strain or pull of the muscle. As with a sprain, a muscle strain can range from a mild injury that necessitates little attention to a severe injury necessitating surgery. Furthermore the two special knee “cartilages” located between the tibia and femur (called the menisci), which facilitate fluid motion and cushioning, may also be torn during traumatic injury. This serious injury frequently requires surgical repair, or even removal if damaged severely.
Traumatic knee injuries can create intense pain and swelling and need immediate examination and care. In the majority of cases an experienced chiropractor, such as your San Jose Chiropractor, can take excellent care of these problems, although there are some injuries that may necessitate the skills of an orthopedic surgeon. Whatever the case, it is crucial to stabilize the injured joint right away and to use ice on the injured area, if possible, until the injury can be examined.
If poor mechanics, overuse problems, or traumatic injuries are not eliminated at an early stage, the tissues of the knee joint, expressly the cartilage, will begin to wear out eventually. In that event the bones will rub on one another, and changes such as bone spurs can occur. This painful affliction, known as degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis, commonly progresses with age. Usual treatment may involve medications such as NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Fortunately, there are natural anti-inflammatory supplements that produce excellent results such as rosemary, glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, bioflavinoids, curcumin. Conservative treatment, such as chiropractic, can be extremely helpful in alleviating the pain. Your San Jose chiropractor is will be happy to recommend anti-inflammatory supplements. In addition, individuals can often help themselves by keeping their weight down, doing exercises (especially in the pool), and wearing cushioned shoes or insoles.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome falls into the category of neurological conditions referred to as nerve entrapment disorders and is clearly the most prevalent of these disorders. As the term “nerve entrapment” infers, these disorders present when a nerve is trapped or compressed between body tissues creating inflammation and impairment of the nerve.
Anatomy
The carpal tunnel is embedded within the underside of the wrist. It is a tunnel, or passage, through which the Median nerve journeys on its way to energize and animate the hand and fingers. In addition to the median nerve, the carpal tunnel includes the nine tendons of the forearm muscles that are responsible for bending and flexing of the fingers and thumb. Also within the tunnel are arteries and lymphatic vessels that provide circulation to the hand. The bottom and sides of this tunnel are formed by wrist bones and the top of the tunnel is covered by a strong band of connective tissue called the transverse carpal ligament. The carpal tunnel is an intensely-packed space about the size of an index finger. The flexor tendons, arteries and median nerve are expected to glide easily past each other during wrist and finger movement.
If the size of the tendon enlarges due to irritation or overuse, or if the carpal tunnel size decreases due to a mechanical dysfunction of the carpal bones, the median nerve can become compressed or entrapped by the carpal tunnel. Initially, carpal tunnel symptoms often include, pain, numbness, pins and needles, and tinging in the fingers and hand, particularly the thumb and adjacent two fingers. These symptoms are especially noticeable in the night and often wake people from their sleep as the individual has to sit up in bed and shake-out and/or rub the hands in order decrease these unpleasant feelings. In addition, activity can cause the hands to feel awkward or weak, and fatigue easily. Over time, the ability to hold small objects using the thumb and fingers can be affected severely and if left untreated, can lead to total dysfunction of the hand.
The following are generic causes and corresponding conditions:
repetitive and forceful grasping with the hands
prolonged computer usage especially with poor wrist position
activities that require repetitive bending of the wrist
broken or dislocated bones in the wrist which produce swelling
arthritis, especially the rheumatoid type
thyroid gland imbalance
sugar diabetes
hormonal changes associated with menopause or pregnancy
Though any of the causes and conditions listed can be instrumental in contributing to the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, often the actual root cannot be found. Nevertheless, those who work with equipment that vibrates and/or perform their jobs in extreme temperatures often develop carpal tunnel symptoms. In addition, repetitive housework as seemingly inconsequential as wringing clothes by hand, can bring on carpal tunnel symptoms. However, the continuing increase in computer use is the most compelling explanation for the number of individuals who are suffering with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome today. The repetitive motions of typing on the keyboard and moving the mouse over extended periods of time is a primary indicator for many people with CTS.
Treatment
Competent diagnosis and treatment is vital to relieving the painful and debilitating symptoms of CTS. Your Ventura Chiropractor is highly skilled in the diagnosis and managment of CTS. Chiropractors are well-trained in treating CTS. Treatment by chiropractor can include ultrasound or low level laser to help reduce inflammation, electro therapy to strengthen weak muscles of the forearm, soft tissue massage to stretch contracted tissues and, of course, adjustments of the dysfunctional joints of the wrist. Your chiropractor may suggest that you wear a splint or support, particularly at night, to aid in the decompression of the carpal tunnel.
