How Do You Get Gum Disease?

There is truly nobody volunteering to willingly contract gum disease. While no one wants the disease, statistical evidence shows in America alone 75% of the country’s adults are affected by the disease. Some catch it early when they notice tender gums and a bit of food sensitivity. Others wait too long and find they require a receding gums treatment because their condition has advanced past the early onset stage. Since the process of the disease is very slow, detection is hard for a patient. For a dental professional it is done quickly and easily.

If you have ever wondered why some patients wait until they are suffering from receding gums before they decide to visit their dental professional, you must remember a few things. By the time gums are noticeably sore, painful, and red the vast majority of the damage is already done. Even worse, the odds are good at this point the gum disease has progressed to such an extent advanced gum disease requires medical or even surgical intervention.

You get gum disease by engaging in inappropriate oral hygiene routines. At times it is the failure to consistently practice oral hygiene in the first place leads to the urgent need for a receding, bleeding gums treatment. At other times it is the failure to use the proper tools which makes healthy gums hard to hold on to. A toothbrush may be used well past its useful life simply because it still looks “okay”. However, in reality it may fail to reach between the teeth as indicated. At other times it is the dental floss that does more harm than good. This can happen by shredding and cutting into the gums rather than gently removing food particles.

Gum disease is also caused by an overly faithful reliance on toothpastes that are laden with ineffective or harsh chemicals. In addition, mouthwashes or rinses are simply alcohol based astringents. These rinses will dry out the oral cavity which only leads to the growth of more bacteria. Some oral care products even go so far as to suggest using them will eliminate the need for a professional gingivitis treatment, which is entirely untrue.

Perhaps the most commonly mentioned reason for contracting gum disease is a person’s failure to seek out a needed periodontal disease treatment. Although some may claim ignorance, by and large most anyone is aware the pain found at the gum line is not normal. At the same time, many consumers tend to get so busy that before long the recommended six month interval between dental appointments has sped by.
